How to Air Fry Chicken Wings

There is no need to preheat an air fryer when cooking chicken wings. The air fryer will heat up very quickly and will rapidly cook your wings to perfection.

  1. Prep wings by removing excess moisture with a paper towel. This will help to make the skin crispier.
  2. If you’re seasoning your wings, toss them in a bowl with olive oil until the skin is lightly and evenly coated. This will help the spices adhere and also help make the skin extra crispy. Season all over with your favorite herbs and spices or just salt and pepper.
  3. Place wings in a non-preheated air fryer at 375°F. Be sure to arrange with minimal overlap if possible. If cooking larger volumes, tossing the wings periodically will ensure even cooking.
  4. Air fry for 20-25 minutes or until skin is crispy and fully cooked through in the center (at least 165°F internal temp for chicken). Just to note, chicken wings can be cooked up to 180°F and remain juicy and tender due to their higher fat content.

How Many Wings Can I Cook at Once?

I was able to fry 1 1/2 pounds of wings in about 20 minutes in a 4-quart air fryer. You can fit up to 2-3 pounds of wings, however, it may take closer to 30 minutes to fully cook. With larger quantities, the trick is to flip/toss the wings a few times throughout frying to ensure an evenly cooked exterior.

Tips & Tricks

  • Experiment with different seasonings, such as garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, or a BBQ rub, to create unique flavor profiles.
  • If cooking in smaller batches, keep the cooked wings warm in a low oven (around 200°F) while the remaining batches cook.
  • Chicken wings can be cooked upwards to 180°F and remain juicy and tender due to their higher fat content.
  • If your wing recipe calls for sauces or gazes, I always recommend adding those last after the wings are fully cooked. Air fry the wings first using the steps above and then toss the wings in a large bowl with buffalo sauce or whatever sauce you’re using just before serving. This prevents making a mess of your air fryer and also makes for crispier and better-tasting wings. This method is perfect for serving wings in a variety of different sauces!

Air Fryer Chicken Wings Recipe (9)

Deliciously crispy air fried wings tossed in a simple dry rub consisting of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2-2 pounds chicken party wings, wingette and drummette separated
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sliced carrots, celery, and ranch dressing for serving

Instructions

  • Pat wings dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture from the skin.

  • Toss wings in a bowl with olive oil until evenly coated. A light coating is all that is needed but add more oil if needed. Season with salt and pepper and all spices. Toss until wings are evenly coated in the dry rub.

  • Transfer wings to a 4-5 quart air fryer arranging them as evenly as possible in the basket with minimal overlap.

  • Air fry at 375°F for 22-26 minutes, or until wings are crispy and fully cooked through (at least 165°F internal temp for chicken). Note: I do not preheat my air fryer prior to cooking wings. Toss the wings 2-3 times throughout the cooking process to ensure even cooking. Serve immediately with optional carrots, celery, and ranch dressing.

Notes

Just to note, chicken wings can be cooked up to 180°F and remain juicy and tender due to their higher fat content.

If cooking closer to 3 pounds of wings, it may take closer to 30 minutes to fully cook the wings, depending on the size of your air fryer. Do not overfill.

If using sauces such as buffalo sauce, I recommend prepping the wings by tossing in olive oil and seasoning with salt and pepper. Air fry the wings first, then toss in buffalo sauce/whatever sauce you’re using just before serving. This prevents a mess and makes for better-tasting and crispier wings.

FAQs

How long does it take to cook chicken wings in the air fryer? ›

Air Fry for 18 minutes, shaking the basket vigorously every 6 minutes, or until the chicken wings are golden brown. Turn heat up to 390 degrees then cook for another 5-6 minutes, shaking the basket every 2 minutes, until wings are brown and crispy. Serve or toss with sauces.

Why are my wings not crispy in air fryer? ›

For crispy wings, take a little extra time to place the wings in the basket one at a time. It is important that the wings don't overlap and aren't too close together. Air fryers work by circulating hot air all around the surface of the food as it cooks, so you need to be conscious of allowing space for that air flow.

Do wings need to be flipped in air fryer? ›

Don't skip flipping the chicken wings, as it helps them brown evenly in the air fryer. Never overcrowd the air fryer basket. You want the hot air to be able to circulate all around each chicken wing so they crisp up perfectly.

How many chicken wings can you put in the air fryer at once? ›

Add the wings to the air fryer (10-12 wings at a time) do not over crowd the air fryer. Cook at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes, depending on how crispy you like them. Remove and repeat until all of the wings are cooked. Serve with hot sauce or ranch and your favorite side dish.

Do you stack chicken wings in air fryer? ›

We had success stacking them into two (but no more than two) layers and shaking them every few minutes to ensure even cooking. However, the wings and drumettes we cooked in a single layer were still crispier.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer for wings? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Can you air fry raw chicken? ›

You sure can. The first time I did it felt strange because all I'd ever cooked in there was vegetables and pre-cooked foods like chicken nuggets, tater tots, etc. As long as you cook your chicken until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, it is perfectly safe to put raw chicken in an Air Fryer.

What is the secret ingredient to crispy wings? ›

Crispy Hack #1: Baking Powder

The most widespread trick on the internet involves sprinkling a little baking powder onto the wings before baking them.

Do you use baking powder or baking soda for air fryer wings? ›

📋 What do we need?
  1. I buy chicken wings from the shop, then cut off the tips. ...
  2. Baking powder is the key to these crispy chicken wings (don't use baking soda/bicarb of soda) – it helps to draw the moisture out of the skin so it crisps up beautifully.
  3. A little salt and pepper for flavour.

Do you air fry chicken skin side up or down? ›

Season the chicken with the juice of 1/2 of the lemon, then season with remaining spices on both sides. Rub the seasoning well all over the chicken then transfer to the air fryer, skin side down. Air fry 400F 12 minutes on each side, until golden and crispy and cooked through in the center.

How much baking powder do you put in chicken wings? ›

Ingredients
  1. 2 pounds (900g) chicken wings, cut into drumettes and flats.
  2. 2 teaspoons (10g) baking powder.
  3. 2 teaspoons (10g) kosher salt; for table salt use half as much by volume or the same weight.
  4. 4 tablespoons (50g) unsalted butter.
  5. 4 tablespoons (60ml) Frank's RedHot Sauce.
  6. Blue cheese dressing, for serving.

Should wings be room temperature before cooking? ›

It's good to keep the wings moving in the oil (a wooden spoon is ideal) so they don't stick together, Toscani says. As with all meat, be sure to leave the wings out at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes before cooking. Cold wings will drastically reduce the temperature of the oil. And cool oil doesn't crisp well.

How long to cook frozen wings in air fryer at 400? ›
