What Happened in Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Episode #2?

Giyu finally got more time in the spotlight as Tanjiro attempts to convince him to join in the fight

Demon Slayer Hashira Training Episode #3 Release Date & Time (3)

Episode #2 of Demon Slayer's: Hashira Training Arc focused primarily on Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, and his difficult past. Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the Demon Slayer Corps leader, asked Tanjiro to attempt to convince Giyu to join in the Hashira Training efforts. The purpose of this training is to strengthen the Demon Slayers in preparation for an imminent battle with Muzan. When Tanjiro arrived to speak with Giyu, he was not receptive to the boy's efforts. Eventually, after much pestering from Tanjiro, Giyu revealed some troubling aspects of his backstory that explain why he was hesitant to join in on the Hashira Training.

Giyu feels unworthy of being called the Water Hashira, because although he did technically pass the Final Selection, he was severely injured by the first demon he came across and was unconscious for the remaining seven days of the challenge. To make matters worse, his best friend at the time, Sabito, passed away during the Final Selection, leaving Giyu with devastating grief. The Water Hashira already dealt with great insecurity and pain after his sister, Tsutako, sacrificed herself to save him from demons the night before her wedding, so after this second similar loss, his confidence and self-worth were destroyed.

Tanjiro Helped Giyu Confront His Past And Move Forward

The series' leads best ability is his unwavering empathy for those around him

Giyu sent Tanjiro away, telling him he was not qualified to train him or any of the other Demon Slayers, since he didn't earn his Water Hashira status fairly. Tanjiro pleaded with Giyu and told him that it was his duty to keep going as a Hashira and to pass on the knowledge and skills that Sabito had gifted him with. This instantly reminded Giyu of a similar interaction he had with Sabito after the death of Tsutako, where he urged him not to give up or let his sister's death be in vain. After this interaction, Giyu agreed to join the Hashira Training.

Seeing Giyu's dark and emotionally challenging past certainly explains his quiet, standoffish nature thus far in the series. This moment also sheds a lot of light on Giyu's inner thoughts and why he often fights alone and refuses to join the other Hashira, preferring to stay in seclusion. Hopefully, with Tanjiro's encouragement, Giyu can face the tough aspects of his past head on and overcome these challenges, becoming more secure in his role as Water Hashira going forward and spreading his valuable knowledge to others. As one of the strongest Hashira, he will also be instrumental in the fight against Muzan.

Lady Tamayo & Shinobu Team Up In Order To Take Down Muzan

Also featured in this episode was a sequence with Ubuyashiki's crow delivering a message to Lady Tamayo, inviting her to come join Shinobu and the Demon Slayers in their fight against Muzan. She accepted the invitation and her and Yushiro began making preparations to travel to the Butterfly Mansion. Meanwhile, the Butterfly Hashira, Shinobu, told Kanao she was unable to participate in the Hashira Training events because she was busy creating a poison for the upcoming battle. She also told Kanao she would reveal to her all the details of the demon who killed Kanae, Shinobu's older sister.

This exciting episode laid the groundwork for a lot of interesting storylines in future episodes. This fourth season will likely include more insights into Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka's past, as well as his lessons on his fascinating Water Breathing Technique, since the Hashira is finally joining the training exercises. Lady Tamayo and Shinobu are sure to have intriguing interactions as they craft the poison to kill Muzan together, revealing more details about these two characters. Finally, viewers will finally discover who killed Kanae Kocho and learn every detail of the heartbreaking situation and the demon who was responsible for the death.
