On International Whale Shark Day, we attended a consultation workshop for the South Ari Marine Park (SAMPa) Management Plan. This workshop is the first in a series of consultation workshops, aimed at finalizing the management plan which is currently in its draft status, for SAMPA to ensure that the Marine Protected Area (MPA) will be fully operational with an effective management plan by December 2024.Taking learnings from Hanifaru Bay Marine Protected Area, data from Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, and feedback from stakeholders, the plan is designed to bring about much needed changes to snorkeling operations in particular within SAMPA.Changes that will, in the long term, result in positive experiences for both whale sharks and tourists.Thank you to Dhigurah Council and the island community for hosting us.š#maldives #MPAs #whalesharkIbrahim N.

In collaboration with the Maldives Ocean Alliance and Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU, the Yellowfin Tuna Fishers Union in the Maldives), we would like to invite you join a campaign #againstlonglining to ask the Maldives government to fully consider the risks and downsides of re-opening the Maldives EEZ to longline fishing. The conservation achievements of the Maldives are threatened by the lifting of the longline ban, which would de facto reopen the Maldives to shark fishing. The proposal allows for the landing of sharks and their sale on international markets.Longline fishing unintentionally captures sharks, manta rays, birds and other marine life. This has devastating consequences for the oceanās health and biodiversity. We need your help to protect our ocean!Urge the Maldivian government to refuse new longline fishing licenses.Sign the petition now and join the campaign. Every signature counts!https://bit.ly/4fGWpSw@maldiveoceanalliance #AgainstLonglining #Maldives #fishing

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity, protecting habitats, and promoting healthy ecosystemsBy recognizing the diverse benefits of MPAs and supporting their sustainable management, travelers can contribute to the conservation of marine biodiversity and the well-being of coastal communities around the world. On world Marine Protected Areas day learn more about the MPAs in our article, written following the opportunity earlier this year for members of our team to participate in a course focussed on Marine Protected Areas delivered in partnership by the Maldives National University (MNU), the UKās Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP), the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency. #marineprotectedareas #mpas #maldives
